When winter weather moves in quickly,
roadways can deteriorate fast. Emergency services are limited in
their ability to respond due to the worsening roads and at the
same time can be overtaxed by the shear number of incidents
being reported. If you don’t need to travel, please stay indoors
where it’s safe and warm.

WPFD has begun renovations, today, on what has been
considered a storage building for over twenty years.
Plans for the existing building include removing all
exterior metal including the roofing, to make way for a

to allow adequate depth to house apparatus 103 and 105.
Also included will be drainage updates to the property
and a concrete apron along the front of the building.
The interior of the facility is going to receive a full
concrete floor slab, insulated walls and ceiling,
lighting and heat and water. We'll add pictures as
soon as possible and keep you updated on the progress.

Jan 20, 2012: White

accessory building on site was involved but no primary
structures were affected. The WPFD arrived on

Jan 19, 2012: White
Plains Fire Department responds to residential structure fire
WPFD was paged
for a residential structure fire at 08.45 and first
units arrived on scene at 08.55. Residence had smoke
showing from the open front door but no visible flames.
The home owner informed command that one individual was
inside the home attempting to extinguish the fire, which
had started in the master bathroom. Personnel entered
the structure to investigate and evacuate the individual
for his safety. The individual had succeeded in
extinguishing the fire, fire personnel pulled a 1-3/4"
crosslay and began overhauling the area and
investigating for fire extension into the walls or
ceiling. A thermal imaging camera was utilized to check
for hot spots or hidden extension.
The outcome of this fire event was a good one for both
the home owner and his son whom had extinguished the
fire. However it could have been much worse, the
extremely smoky conditions throughout the residence
could have easily overtaken him and rendered him
unconscious, not to mention the apparent extreme heat in
the master bathroom and adjoining bedroom.
Approximately 10 minutes after the fire had been
extinguished fire perrsonnel witnessed wall and ceiling
temperatures over 140 degrees at the seat of the fire.
The window blinds in the adjoining bedroom had already
started melting from the extreme heat. A skylight in
the bathroom had begun melting and was sagging into the
room.
We're all very happy with the outcome, but please keep
safety in mind in any fire incident, your life isn't
replaceable.
The images below show the damage that can take place in
just minutes, the photo to the right shows the skylight
sagging from the heat.
Jan 9, 2012: White Plains Fire
Department responds to roll off garbage container fire
WPFD was paged
for a garbage container, on fire, that was in route to
the regional landfill at 15.18 hours. Engine 100 and
attack 105 arrived on scene at 15:21 and proceeded to
close the roadway and begin extinguishment operations.
The driver was requested to off load the container to
ease access by the firefighters. A 1-3/4" pre-connect
was utilized with Class "A" foam initially, followed by
a piercing nozzle to extend water deeper into the trash
container. Upon extinguishment the driver reloaded the
container and proceeded to the landfill. Responders
washed down the area and commenced with loading of hose
and appliances, then returned to quarters.
