When winter weather moves in quickly,
roadways can deteriorate fast. Emergency services are limited in
their ability to respond due to the worsening roads and at the
same time can be overtaxed by the shear number of incidents
being reported. If you don’t need to travel, please stay indoors
where it’s safe and warm.
If you must travel, please use extreme caution and allow
additional time to get to your destination. Also please
make sure your fuel tank is full, this allows you to keep the
engine running to maintain heat inside the vehicle if you do
become stuck on a roadway and have to wait for assistance.
Here are a few other things to consider:
|
| |
- Make sure your cell phone is
fully charged and keep a charger cable in your vehicle
- Carry a few blankets with you
to help maintain body heat in the event your engine dies or
you run out of fuel
- Carry a flashlight or two, this
can give you light inside the vehicle as well as be utilized
to flag down help from a distance.
- Keep a few bottles of water in
the vehicle with you in the event you’re there for a while,
especially if traveling with children, consider keeping some
snacks and a game or two to keep the children busy.
- Remember to use common sense,
increase stopping distances and lower speeds to get you
where you need to be safely.
|
If you are involved in an accident,
consider its severity. If you, a passenger or another
driver are injured, trapped or require assistance please
dial 911. Think about the information you need to
relay to the emergency operator:
|
|
|
- Your location (roadway name,
mile marker or residence number, direction of travel)
- The
type of incident (single or multiple vehicles, ditch or
embankment, rollover, pedestrian involvement)
- Number
of persons injured (if multiple severe injuries have
occurred, multiple ambulances will be needed)
- Is
anyone unconscious or unresponsive
- Make
sure the dispatcher has your name and your phone number to
be able to call you back or to ping the phone in
the event you’re not sure where you are or if emergency
services are unable to locate you.
- Request
the emergency operators name so you have a reference name if
you call back.
|
The main thing in any emergency
incident is to remain as calm as possible throughout the
incident, getting upset or excited limits your ability to
think clearly and make wise decisions. When emergency
personnel arrive on scene, answer their questions and assist
if requested, otherwise please step back and allow them to
perform the tasks at hand, this allows them to work quickly
and efficiently without additional distractions.
Travel safe. |
